Why More Couples Are Choosing Weekday Weddings in Minnesota | T Hughes Weddings
When you picture a wedding day, there's a pretty good chance you automatically picture a Saturday.
Saturday ceremony.
Saturday reception.
Sunday morning brunch.
That's just how weddings are supposed to work...
Right?
Not necessarily.
More couples are realizing that there's absolutely no rule saying you have to get married on a Saturday.
And once you start looking at the benefits of a weekday wedding, you might find yourself wondering why you were fighting everyone else for the same handful of Saturdays in the first place. 😂
Thursday and Friday weddings in particular can give couples more flexibility when choosing venues and vendors—and depending on who you book, they may even save you money.
So before you automatically eliminate every date that isn't a Saturday, here are some reasons aweekday wedding in Minnesota might actually make MORE sense for you.
1. Your Dream Venue Might Actually Be Available
This is one of the biggest reasons I'd tell couples to at least LOOK at weekday dates.
Popular Minnesota wedding venues can book Saturdays far in advance, especially during peak wedding season.
You find the venue.
You fall in love with it.
You start picturing your ceremony there.
Then you ask about dates and hear:
"We have one Saturday available 19 months from now."
😐
But ask about Fridays?
You may suddenly have options.
And Thursdays can open up even more possibilities.
If the venue matters more to you than having a specific day of the week, choosing a weekday could mean getting married at the place you actually LOVE rather than settling for whatever venue still has a Saturday available.
2. Weekday Weddings May Save You Money
Let's get to the part everyone wants to know.
Can getting married on a weekday actually save money?
Potentially, yes.
Not every venue or vendor offers weekday pricing, so you shouldn't automatically assume everything will be cheaper.
But some venues offer:
Lower rental rates
Reduced minimums
Special weekday packages
More flexible options
Additional inclusions
Different food or beverage minimums
Some wedding vendors offer weekday discounts too.
Including us. 👋
T Hughes Weddings offers special discounts for Sunday–Friday wedding dates.
Our wedding photography and videography packages currentlystart at $3,000 before applicable discounts.
So if you're flexible about your date, it's definitely worth comparing the price of the wedding you want on a Saturday with the SAME wedding on a Thursday or Friday.
You might be surprised by the difference.
3. You May Have More Photographers and Videographers to Choose From
Peak-season Saturdays disappear quickly for wedding photographers.
Especially popular dates.
That means you might find a photographer whose work you absolutely LOVE...
only to discover they're already booked.
And the next photographer is booked.
And the next one.
Suddenly you're not choosing your wedding photographer based on who you connect with or whose work you love.
You're choosing based on:
Who still has October 10 available?
A weekday wedding can completely change that.
Photographers and videographers who are booked for Saturdays may still have Thursday or Friday available.
That means you get to make your decision based on:
Style.
Personality.
Experience.
Packages.
Photography approach.
Videography options.
And whether you actually want to spend your wedding day with that person.
That's a MUCH better way to choose.
4. You May Have More Options With ALL of Your Vendors
It's not just photographers.
Choosing a weekday may give you more choices when booking:
DJs.
Florists.
Hair and makeup artists.
Videographers.
Photo booths.
Wedding planners.
Officiants.
Transportation.
Rental companies.
Caterers.
Again, this isn't guaranteed.
But Saturdays are the highest-demand wedding dates for a lot of businesses.
So moving your wedding even ONE day earlier to Friday can open up a surprising number of options.
5. A Friday Wedding Gives You the Whole Weekend
This is probably one of my FAVORITE arguments for a Friday wedding.
You get married Friday.
Then you wake up Saturday morning and realize...
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO WORK TOMORROW.😂
You can spend Saturday:
Having brunch with your family.
Opening gifts.
Relaxing at the hotel.
Going somewhere with your wedding party.
Starting your honeymoon.
Recovering from the reception.
Or doing absolutely nothing.
Instead of having a Saturday wedding and waking up Sunday feeling like the entire weekend disappeared, a Friday wedding can make the celebration feel longer.
6. Your Wedding Can Become a Whole Weekend Experience
This works especially well if you have guests traveling to Minnesota or you're having a destination-style wedding somewhere like Duluth, the North Shore or another getaway location.
Instead of:
Arrive Saturday → wedding → leave Sunday.
You could create:
Thursday:Rehearsal dinner or welcome party
Friday:WEDDING!
Saturday:Brunch, exploring, lake day, brewery, family time, etc.
Sunday:Everyone heads home
Now your wedding isn't just a six-hour event.
It's an entire experience.
And you don't necessarily need to pay for every activity.
You can simply tell guests:
"We'll be at this brewery Saturday afternoon if anyone wants to join us!"
People can participate as much—or as little—as they want.
7. A Smaller Guest List Can Actually Be a Good Thing
Here's one of the biggest concerns I hear about weekday weddings:
"But what if people can't come?"
That's a valid concern.
Some guests won't be able to take time off work.
Some families may have school schedules to consider.
Some guests traveling long distances may have a harder time attending.
If having 250 people at your wedding is extremely important to you, a Tuesday afternoon wedding probably isn't the move. 😂
But if you've secretly been looking for a way to have a smaller wedding without offending everyone you've ever met...
A weekday wedding might naturally help.
Instead of inviting your mom's coworker's cousin because you have room...
you can create a guest list centered around the people you're genuinely closest to.
Sometimes smaller weddings also mean you can spend more per guest while keeping the same overall budget.
8. Your Closest People Will Usually Make It Work
I'm not saying EVERY person you invite will be able to attend a weekday wedding.
That's simply not realistic.
But the people closest to you will often plan around it if you give them enough notice.
That's whysave-the-dates are especially important for weekday weddings.
Give guests time to:
Request PTO.
Arrange childcare.
Plan travel.
Book hotels.
Coordinate school schedules.
The earlier people know, the easier it is for them to make arrangements.
9. Friday Weddings Are Especially Guest-Friendly
If you're nervous about asking guests to attend a weekday wedding,Friday is probably the easiest place to start.
Some guests may only need to take Friday afternoon off.
Others may turn it into a long weekend.
Guests traveling from out of town can arrive Thursday evening and head home Sunday.
And because Saturday is completely open afterward, people aren't immediately rushing home the morning after your wedding.
For a lot of couples, Friday gives you the benefits of a weekday wedding without feeling TOO unconventional.
10. Thursday Weddings Can Be Amazing Too
Don't completely ignore Thursday!
A Thursday wedding may give you even MORE availability than Friday.
And it works especially well for:
Smaller weddings.
Elopements.
Destination weddings.
Intimate celebrations.
Weddings with mostly local guests.
Or couples whose guests have flexible schedules.
You can also turn it into a REALLY long weekend.
Wedding Thursday.
Celebrate Friday.
Enjoy Saturday.
Head home Sunday.
Not bad. 😂
11. Your Vendors May Be Less Stretched Thin
This isn't something couples always think about.
During peak wedding season, wedding professionals can have events Friday, Saturday AND Sunday.
That's normal—we're used to it.
But weekday weddings can sometimes happen outside that crazy weekend rush.
That can make scheduling things like:
Venue walkthroughs.
Rehearsals.
Rental delivery.
Hair and makeup.
Vendor arrival.
And other logistics a little more flexible.
Again, this depends entirely on the vendors you choose, but it's another question worth asking.
12. Weekday Weddings Work REALLY Well for Smaller Weddings and Elopements
If you're planning an intimate wedding, there's even less reason to feel tied to Saturday.
Imagine getting married on a Thursday with 25 of your favorite people.
You have your ceremony.
Take gorgeous photographs.
Go to an amazing dinner.
Celebrate without worrying about entertaining 200 guests.
Then wake up Friday and start your honeymoon.
YES.
For elopements, weekday dates can be especially helpful because popular parks, overlooks, downtown areas and other public locations may be less crowded than they are on weekends.
That can make the entire experience feel more private.
13. Your Ceremony Time Can Be Different
A weekday wedding doesn't have to follow the traditional:
3:30 ceremony.
5:00 cocktail hour.
6:00 dinner.
You can build the day around what actually works for you.
For example, a Friday wedding could have a5:30 PM ceremony, allowing local guests to work part of the day before attending.
Or you could do an earlier ceremony if your guests are already taking the day off.
You have options.
Just remember that in Minnesota, your ceremony time should also account forsunsetif outdoor wedding photographs are important to you.
Especially during fall and winter.
14. You Can Still Have a "Real Wedding"
I want to say this because sometimes couples hear "weekday wedding" and picture something smaller or less important.
Nope.
You can still have:
The gorgeous venue.
The big dress.
150 guests.
A full wedding party.
Photography AND videography.
The DJ.
The cake.
The first dance.
The flowers.
The huge reception.
The sparkler exit.
All of it.
The calendar sayingFridayinstead ofSaturdaydoes not somehow make your marriage less official. 😂
You can have exactly the same wedding.
Just on a different day.
15. You Might Be Able to Put Your Savings Toward Something You Care About More
Let's say choosing Friday instead of Saturday saves you money between your venue and a few vendors.
You don't HAVE to spend that money elsewhere.
You can simply have a less expensive wedding.
But you could also use it to upgrade something that's important to you.
Maybe that's:
Adding videography.
A better photography package.
Your dream dress.
An album.
A honeymoon.
A photo booth.
More flowers.
Better food.
An open bar.
Or extra time with your photographer.
Instead of spending more simply to have the wordSaturdayprinted on your invitations, you can put that money toward something you'll actually notice.
16. Combining Weekday + Winter Can Open Up Even More Possibilities
Now let's get really adventurous. 😂
What about aFriday winter wedding?
Winter is already considered off-season for many Minnesota wedding businesses.
Weekdays can also have lower demand.
Combine the two and you may find:
More venue availability.
More vendor availability.
Potential discounts.
More flexibility.
And an absolutely gorgeous winter wedding.
This is one of those options I'd especially recommend exploring if you're trying to have a beautiful wedding without watching your budget completely spiral out of control.
Are There Downsides to a Weekday Wedding?
Absolutely.
I don't want to pretend weekday weddings are perfect for every couple.
Things you need to consider include:
Some guests may not be able to take off work.
Parents may need to work around school schedules.
Guests traveling long distances may need additional PTO.
Evening traffic could affect travel.
Your wedding party may need more time off than other guests.
Older relatives or guests with rigid work schedules may have difficulty attending.
Those things matter.
So before booking a weekday, look at yourVIP guest list.
Parents.
Grandparents.
Siblings.
Best friends.
Anyone you absolutely cannot imagine getting married without.
Talk to those people first.
If the ten people who matter most say:
"Yep. Give us the date and we'll be there."
Then everyone else can decide whether it works for them.
How Do You Make a Weekday Wedding Easier for Guests?
Communication.
Communication.
Communication.
If you're having a weekday wedding, give people as much notice as possible.
Send save-the-dates early.
Clearly state the day of the week.
Don't just write:
October 9, 2027.
Write:
FRIDAY, October 9, 2027.
You don't want Aunt Linda discovering six weeks before the wedding that October 9 is, in fact, not a Saturday. 😂
Include hotel information early too, especially for guests traveling.
And if possible, schedule the ceremony at a time that makes sense for the majority of your guests.
Is a Weekday Wedding Right for You?
