Why I Love Photographing Minnesota Barn Weddings

If you asked me what kind of wedding I could photograph over and over again and never get tired of, barn weddings would be pretty high on my list.

There is just something about them.

Maybe it's the warm wood, the open fields, the string lights coming on as the sun goes down, or the fact that barn weddings tend to feel a little more relaxed and personal. Whatever it is, I've realized that these are some of the wedding days I genuinely love photographing.

And at this point in my career, that's important to me.

I don't want to choose weddings based solely on how expensive they are or whether they fit someone's definition of a "luxury wedding." I want to photograph weddings that I'm excited to walk into with my camera.

For me, a beautiful Minnesota barn wedding checks a whole lot of those boxes.

Barn Weddings Have So Much Variety for Photos

One of my favorite things about photographing barn weddings is how many different looks we can create without ever leaving the venue.

Inside, we might have gorgeous wooden beams, big barn doors, twinkle lights, chandeliers, or beautifully decorated reception spaces.

Then we walk outside and suddenly we have fields, trees, gravel roads, tall grass, fences, sunsets, and wide-open Minnesota skies.

That variety gives us the opportunity to create completely different photographs throughout your wedding day while still keeping everything relaxed.

We don't necessarily need to load the entire wedding party into vehicles and disappear for an hour just to find somewhere pretty for photos.

Sometimes the perfect spot is literally right outside the barn.

Give Me a Minnesota Sunset and an Open Field

This might be one of my favorite parts.

If your barn wedding venue has an open field and we're lucky enough to get a beautiful sunset, there is a very good chance I'm going to steal the two of you away from your reception for a few minutes.

You don't need another hour-long portrait session.

Give me 10 or 15 minutes, some pretty light, and the two of you.

Those few minutes can create some of my favorite photographs from an entire wedding day.

And honestly? It can be a nice little break for you, too.

Your wedding day goes FAST. Sneaking outside together for sunset photos gives you a few minutes away from everyone where you can actually look at each other and realize,Holy crap, we're married.

Then you can head right back inside and keep celebrating.

I Want the Colors of Your Wedding to Look Like the Colors You Chose

My editing style has always been something I care deeply about, and I've come back to what I truly love:true-to-color wedding photography.

If you spent months choosing the exact shade of green for your bridesmaid dresses, I want them to actually look green in your photographs.

If your flowers were filled with pinks, oranges, yellows, blues, or deep fall colors, I want you to see those colors when you look through your gallery.

If your barn has beautiful warm wood, I don't want to completely change the way it looked.

Of course, every photographer puts their own artistic touch into their work—I do too. But my goal is for your photographs to feel warm, natural, colorful, and timeless while still looking likeyour wedding day.

Twenty years from now, I want you to remember what everything actually looked and felt like.

Barn Weddings Don't Have to Mean "Simple"

I think sometimes people hear "barn wedding" and immediately picture burlap, mason jars, and cowboy boots.

And sure—if that's your thing, go for it!

But barn weddings can be SO many different things.

I've seen rustic weddings, romantic weddings, elegant weddings, western weddings, colorful weddings, boho weddings, and incredibly detailed weddings all happen inside barn venues.

That's another reason I love them.

You can take the same venue and completely transform it based on your personality.

A barn is basically a giant blank canvas.

Add florals, candles, greenery, draping, beautiful table settings, string lights, or whatever fits the two of you, and suddenly that space becomes YOUR wedding.

The Best Wedding Photos Usually Aren't About the Venue Anyway

I love a gorgeous venue.

I love pretty flowers.

I love a beautifully decorated reception.

But those things aren't what make me love a wedding gallery.

It's the people.

It's Mom crying while helping you into your dress.

It's your best friend losing it when she sees you for the first time.

It's Grandma absolutely destroying everyone on the dance floor.

It's the flower girl who decides halfway down the aisle that she's done cooperating.

It's your husband looking at you when he thinks nobody is paying attention.

It's the wedding party doing something completely ridiculous five seconds after I finally got everyone to behave for one nice photograph.

Those are the things I want to document.

I will absolutely give you beautiful portraits to hang on your walls. But I also want you to have hundreds of little moments that bring the entire day back when you look through your gallery.

Your Wedding Doesn't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's

This is probably one of the biggest things I've learned after photographing weddings.

There isn't one correct way to have a beautiful wedding.

Your wedding doesn't have to be at a giant ballroom.

You don't need thousands of dollars worth of flowers.

You don't need to follow every trend you see on TikTok or Pinterest.

And you definitely don't need to plan your wedding around what you think will impress Instagram.

You need a day that feels like the two of you.

If that's a gorgeous barn in the Minnesota countryside filled with your favorite people, I'm probably going to be pretty excited about it.
