Do You Need a Second Photographer at Your Wedding?

When couples start comparing wedding photography packages, one thing they often notice is that some photographers work alone while others offer a second photographer as an upgrade.

At Hughes Photo & Video LLC, we've made a different choice:

Our wedding photography packages include two photographers.

Why?

Because after photographing weddings, I've seen how much of a difference having two photographers can make—not just in the number of photographs you receive, but in how completely we're able to tell the story of your wedding day.

Could one photographer photograph a wedding?

Absolutely.

But when it comes to something you only get to experience once, I don't want to choose between photographing Mom's reaction and yours.

I want both.

Two Photographers Can Be in Two Places at Once

This is the most obvious advantage, but it's also one of the biggest.

Wedding days have a funny way of having multiple important things happening at exactly the same time.

While one photographer is with the bride getting ready, another can be photographing the groom.

While I'm photographing your dress, rings, invitations, and other details, the second photographer can be documenting something happening elsewhere.

And when you're getting ready in completely different locations?

Having two photographers becomes even more valuable.

Instead of trying to rush back and forth, we can divide and conquer.

You both deserve to have the beginning of your wedding day documented.

We Can Capture BOTH Reactions During the Ceremony

This is one of my absolute favorite reasons for having two photographers.

Picture this:

The ceremony begins.

The doors open.

The bride starts walking down the aisle.

There are TWO reactions I desperately want.

Her reaction.

And...

The groom's reaction when he sees her.

With two photographers, I don't have to choose.

One of us can photograph the bride coming down the aisle while the other is already positioned to capture the groom.

And it isn't only the couple.

Mom might be crying.

Dad might be trying very hard NOT to cry.

Grandma might have the biggest smile on her face.

Your best friend might already be completely losing it.

Those reactions are part of your wedding story too.

Your Ceremony Can Be Photographed From Multiple Angles

Ceremonies happen quickly.

The kiss lasts seconds.

Rings are exchanged.

Someone wipes away a tear.

You look at each other and laugh.

And none of it can be repeated.

With two photographers, we can photograph those moments from different perspectives.

One photographer might be toward the front while the other is farther back.

One can capture a close-up of you exchanging rings while the other photographs the entire ceremony space.

One can capture your first kiss from one angle while the other captures your guests reacting behind you.

That variety makes your final wedding gallery feel much more complete.

Your Photographer Doesn't Have to Run Around Like a Crazy Person 😂

Wedding photographers move A LOT.

Trust me.

But there is a difference between moving intentionally and spending your entire wedding day sprinting from one side of the venue to another because we're trying to be everywhere at once.

Having two photographers allows us to work more efficiently.

If something is happening on opposite sides of the venue, we can split up.

That means less rushing for us...

and less rushing for YOU.

I'm a huge believer that your wedding shouldn't feel like an eight-hour photoshoot.

You should actually get to enjoy the day you've spent months planning.

Having another photographer helps us document more without constantly pulling you away from your wedding.

Getting-Ready Photos Are So Much Easier

Let's say you're getting ready with your bridesmaids in the bridal suite.

Meanwhile, your partner is somewhere else getting ready with the guys.

With one photographer, someone usually has to wait.

I'd photograph one person, pack everything up, walk or drive to the other location, photograph them, and then move on to whatever happens next.

With two photographers?

One of us goes with each side.

We can photograph both of you getting ready at approximately the same time.

That also means we can capture more of the little things happening naturally.

Your mom helping with your dress.

Your bridesmaids seeing you completely ready.

The guys trying to figure out how boutonnieres work. 😂

Someone realizing nobody knows how to fold a pocket square.

Dad seeing you for the first time.

Those little moments become some of my favorite photographs.

We Can Photograph Cocktail Hour While You're Taking Portraits

This is another HUGE advantage.

If you're taking family photographs or wedding-party portraits immediately after the ceremony, guess what's happening somewhere else?

Your cocktail hour!

Your guests are mingling.

People are hugging family members they haven't seen in forever.

They're laughing.

They're grabbing drinks.

They're checking out your decorations.

They're signing your guest book.

And you're not there to see any of it.

With two photographers, one of us can stay with you for portraits while the other spends some time documenting what's happening with your guests.

Those photos help tell the part of your wedding story that you personally didn't get to see.

One Photographer Can Focus on the "Must-Have" While the Other Watches for the Unexpected

There are certain photographs we know we need.

The first kiss.

Walking down the aisle.

Family portraits.

Wedding-party photographs.

The first dance.

Cake cutting.

Speeches.

Those are important.

But some of my favorite wedding photographs aren't things we planned at all.

They're reactions.

A kid doing something hilarious.

Grandparents holding hands.

Your parents watching you dance.

A bridesmaid crying during your vows.

Someone absolutely living their best life on the dance floor.

While one photographer is focused on the main event, the second photographer can look around the room and find those smaller stories happening around it.

And sometimes those become the photographs you love most.

Two Photographers Give You More Variety

Even when we're photographing the exact same moment, two photographers aren't necessarily creating the same photograph.

We may be using different lenses.

Standing in different locations.

Photographing different people.

One photographer may take the beautiful wide shot showing your entire venue while the other creates the close-up where you can actually see the tears in your eyes.

I want both.

When you receive your wedding gallery, I want it to feel like you can actually relive the day—not like you're seeing the entire wedding from one person's viewpoint.

It's Especially Helpful for Larger Weddings

The more people you have at your wedding, the more things are happening.

A wedding with 150 or 200 guests has a LOT of stories happening simultaneously.

There are more family members.

More reactions.

More dancing.

More conversations.

More details.

More opportunities for photographs.

Two photographers allow us to spread out and document more of it.

This is also incredibly helpful during family and wedding-party photographs because one photographer can be taking the picture while the other helps organize who's next.

Anything that gets family photos done faster gets my vote. 😂

Because nobody wants to spend 45 minutes standing around wondering where Uncle Bob disappeared to.

What About Smaller Weddings?

I still love having two photographers.

A second photographer isn't only useful because you have a huge guest list.

Even at a smaller wedding, you still have two people getting married.

Two families.

Two sides of the wedding party.

Multiple reactions.

Different perspectives.

And dozens of little moments happening throughout the day.

The benefit isn't simplymore photographs.

It's more of yourstory.

There's Also Another Reason I Like Having Two Photographers

Weddings don't have do-overs.

We take our responsibility very seriously.

Professional photographers use backup equipment, multiple memory cards when possible, and systems designed to protect your images.

Having another professional photographer there adds another layer to that preparation.

It isn't something couples necessarily think about when looking at pretty wedding photos online, but it's something I think about.

You are trusting us with photographs that can't simply be recreated next weekend.

I want to approach that responsibility accordingly.

So, Do You NEED Two Wedding Photographers?

Technically?

Not every wedding requires two photographers to create beautiful images.

But do I think having two photographers gives us a better opportunity to tell the COMPLETE story of your wedding?

Absolutely.

That's why I don't want my couples having to decide whether a second photographer is "worth the upgrade."

We've already made that decision.

Our wedding photography packages include two photographers because we believe it gives our couples better coverage of their wedding day.

I want the big portrait of the two of you standing in front of your venue.

But I also want Mom crying behind me.

I want the bride walking down the aisle.

But I also want the groom's face when he sees her.

I want your first dance.

But I also want your parents watching from across the room.

Your wedding isn't made up of one moment happening at a time.

There are stories happening everywhere.

Having two photographers gives us a better chance of capturing them.

Wedding Photography Should Tell the Whole Story

Years from now, I don't just want you to remember what your wedding looked like.

I want you to remember what itfelt like.

The nerves while getting ready.

The reaction when you saw each other.

Your parents' faces during the ceremony.

Your best friend's speech.

The sunset outside your venue.

Grandma dancing.

Your friends laughing.

The quiet moments.

The ridiculous moments.

And everything in between.

That's the kind of wedding gallery I want to deliver.
