For a winter wedding, I especially love venues that have beautiful indoor spaces, plenty of natural light, good portrait locations and enough variety that your wedding will still photograph beautifully even if we barely step outside.

1.Edward Anne Estate at Bavaria Downs— Chaska, Minnesota

If you're picturing an elegant, luxurious winter wedding, Bavaria Downs deserves a spot near the top of your list.

The Bavaria Downs property sits on roughly 200 acres and currently has three distinct venues, including Edward Anne Estate. The estate offers beautiful architecture and substantial indoor space, which is exactly what I like to see for a Minnesota winter wedding.

From a photography perspective, this type of venue gives us options.

If it's beautiful outside?

Let's go play in the snow.

If Minnesota decides it's going to be ridiculously cold?

We still have an elegant interior to work with.

2. Pinewood Weddings & Events — Cambridge, Minnesota

If your Pinterest board is filled with snowy pine trees...

LOOK AT THIS ONE.

Pinewood is surrounded by a pine forest about an hour north of Minneapolis, and the venue was actually designed by a former wedding photographer.

So yes—they thought about the pictures. 😂

The indoor ceremony and reception spaces allow you to keep the majority of your celebration inside while those towering trees create an incredible winter portrait backdrop outside.

They even specifically address winter weddings in their policies. Winter ceremonies are generally held indoors, although outdoor ceremonies may sometimes be possible depending on snow, ice and safety conditions.

Perfect for:Modern weddings, nature-loving couples, snowy forest portraits and couples who want the outdoors incorporated into an elegant venue.

3. The Hutton House — Medicine Lake, Minnesota

If you love clean, bright and modern wedding venues, The Hutton House is SUCH a good winter option.

The venue has high ceilings, beautiful natural light and approximately 12,500 square feet of indoor event space.

And that's exactly what we're looking for in winter.

Large windows and neutral interiors mean we're not completely dependent on being outside for beautiful photographs.

The Fireside Room is another major winter bonus, with its floor-to-ceiling fireplace creating exactly the cozy atmosphere people picture when they imagine a winter wedding.

Minnesota Bride has even featured a winter celebration here built around evergreens, warm neutrals and winter textures.

4. Ashery Lane Farm — Mayer, Minnesota

Ashery Lane combines an upscale barn feeling with some seriously cozy winter elements.

The Grand Barn features exposed wood beams, vaulted ceilings and a large stone fireplace, giving you a warm indoor setting while still feeling connected to the Minnesota countryside.

That combination can photograph beautifully in winter because we can create two totally different looks:

5.Mayowood Stone Barn— Rochester, Minnesota

Southern Minnesota couples—don't feel like you have to drive all the way into the Twin Cities to find an incredible venue.

Mayowood Stone Barn is located just outside Rochester and features distinctive historic stone architecture with multiple spaces on the same property.

One of the things I especially like about that setup for winter is the ability to keep different parts of the wedding day in one location rather than sending your wedding party all over Rochester in questionable weather.

6.Abella Weddings & Events— Chisago City, Minnesota

Abella is another gorgeous choice if you want something that feels elegant without losing the countryside setting.

It's a French-country-inspired venue on about 19 secluded acres and has a bright reception space with large windows and indoor ceremony options.

Those windows are especially important to me from a photography perspective.

When it's freezing outside, having an indoor venue with beautiful natural light gives us MUCH more flexibility for portraits.

And if the weather is nice enough to step outside?

Now we've got the property too.

Perfect for:Romantic weddings, light and airy styles, French-country inspiration and couples who want an indoor/outdoor feel even during winter.

7.Hope Glen Farm— Cottage Grove, Minnesota

Hope Glen Farm is a historic barn-and-farm wedding venue in Cottage Grove that mixes rustic character with modern amenities.

And here's an important winter detail:

The venue has heat.😂

That's the difference between a rustic winter wedding being charming and everybody questioning their life choices.

The venue also offers weather accommodations and multiple spaces, which gives couples more flexibility when Minnesota weather doesn't cooperate.

That's a HUGE plus.

The fewer times we need to load 20 people into vehicles and drive somewhere else while it's snowing, the happier everyone tends to be. 😂

I'm adding this one especially for my Southern Minnesota couples.

Keeping everything close together is especially valuable for winter weddings because it minimizes unnecessary travel.

And from a photographer's perspective, having different areas available on one property gives us more flexibility when creating your wedding timeline.

What Should You Look for in a Minnesota Winter Wedding Venue?

The prettiest venue on Instagram isn't necessarily the best winter venue.

When you're touring venues for a December, January, February or early-March wedding, ask questions that you might not think about for a summer wedding.

I would specifically ask:

• Is the entire ceremony and reception space heated?

• Is there a dedicated indoor ceremony location?

• Where can we take photographs if it's dangerously cold?

• Are there large windows or areas with natural light?

• Who handles snow and ice removal?

• How far is guest parking from the entrance?

• Are getting-ready suites inside the same building?

• Can the entire wedding happen on-site?

• Is there a coat-check or coat-storage area?

• Are outdoor portraits allowed during winter?

• Are there fireplaces, covered patios or other winter-friendly portrait areas?

• Does the venue offer winter or weekday pricing?

That last one is worth asking even if you don't see a discount advertised.

Think About Your Photographs When Touring Venues

This is something couples don't always think about until AFTER they've booked.

When you tour a venue, don't only look at the ceremony space.

Look around and ask:

"If it's -10 degrees on our wedding day and we can't spend much time outside, where are we taking pictures?"

Look at the getting-ready suites.

Hallways.

Windows.

Staircases.

Fireplaces.

Entrances.

Covered porches.

Interesting walls.

Reception space.

Anywhere with beautiful natural light.

If there are five beautiful indoor locations AND gorgeous outdoor scenery?

That's a winter wedding photographer's dream.

Because then we're prepared for pretty much anything.

Don't Choose a Venue ONLY Because It Looks Pretty in the Snow

Here's the other side of that.

Snow isn't guaranteed.

Even in Minnesota.

I know. Rude. 😂

If you're touring a venue in July for your February wedding, don't imagine that every inch of the property will automatically be covered in perfect fluffy white snow.

Ask yourself:

Would I still love this venue if there wasn't any snow on my wedding day?

If the answer is yes?

You've probably found a much stronger contender.

Your venue should be beautiful regardless.

Snow is the bonus.

A Winter Venue Can Completely Change the Feel of Your Wedding

One of my favorite things about winter weddings is how different they can feel from peak wedding season.

Instead of bright summer light and outdoor cocktail hours, you can lean into:

Candles.

Fireplaces.

Champagne.

Velvet.

Faux fur.

Black-tie attire.

Warm lighting.

Dark florals.

Evergreens.

Snowy portraits.

Nighttime photographs.

And you don't have to make it Christmasy unless that's genuinely what you want.

Winter itself can be the aesthetic.
