You start out thinking:

"We just need a venue, food, a photographer and maybe some flowers."

And approximately 20 minutes later you have a spreadsheet with 47 categories and you're Googling whether you REALLY need fancy napkins. 😂

So naturally, one of the biggest questions couples have when they're deciding on a wedding date is:

Can the date we choose actually save us money?

And if you're getting married in Minnesota, there's one option that's definitely worth looking into:

A winter wedding.

Winter is traditionally considered part of the wedding off-season here in Minnesota, which means some venues and wedding vendors may have different pricing, minimums or special offers available.

But does that mean winter weddings are ALWAYS cheaper?

No.

There are a few catches.

So let's talk about where you might actually save, where you probably won't and whether choosing a Minnesota winter wedding could help you stretch your wedding budget a little further.

First: Are Winter Weddings Actually Cheaper?

The short answer?

They can be.

The longer answer is that there isn't one universal "winter wedding discount."

Every venue and wedding vendor sets their own pricing.

Some charge exactly the same amount whether you're getting married in January or July.

Others offer substantial off-season savings.

That's why it's worth asking.

If you're flexible about your wedding date, you may discover that your budget goes further in January or February than it would on a Saturday in September.

And sometimes, the savings aren't just coming from one vendor.

They can add up across several parts of your wedding.

1. Your Wedding Venue May Cost Less

Your venue is often one of the biggest expenses in your wedding budget, so this is the first place I'd look.

Peak wedding season in Minnesota tends to be heavily concentrated around the warmer months, especially those beautiful late-summer and fall weekends.

Those dates are popular.

Which means venues don't necessarily need to offer incentives to fill them.

Winter is different.

Depending on the venue, you may find:

• Lower winter rental rates

• Off-season packages

• Lower food and beverage minimums

• Reduced ceremony fees

• Extra hours included

• Complimentary upgrades

• More flexible packages

Not every Minnesota venue does this, but enough do that it's worth comparing.

When you contact a venue, don't just ask:

"How much does a wedding cost?"

Ask:

"Do you offer different pricing or packages for winter weddings?"

You may get a completely different answer.

2. You May Get Your Dream Venue Without Paying for the Most Expensive Date

Sometimes saving money isn't about getting something "cheaper."

It's about gettingmore for the same budget.

Maybe the venue you absolutely love is outside your budget for a Saturday in September.

But a January date?

Suddenly it works.

Or maybe the venue has multiple packages and your budget only gets you the basic package during peak season, while winter pricing allows you to upgrade.

That's something couples sometimes miss when comparing wedding costs.

Don't only compare:

$5,000 vs. $4,000.

Compare what you're actually GETTING for that amount.

3. Photography and Videography May Have Winter Discounts

Wedding photographers and videographers tend to book heavily during peak wedding season too.

4. Your Wedding Date Can Matter Just as Much as the Season

Here's where things get even more interesting.

ASaturday in Decembermay still be popular.

But aFriday in January?

Now you may have TWO things working in your favor:

Winter + weekday.

Some venues and vendors offer separate discounts for non-Saturday weddings.

Instead of immediately searching:

Saturday, October 10

Try asking venues and vendors:

"What are your best-value dates during January or February?"

5. You May Have More Vendor Options

This isn't technically a dollar amount, but it can have a huge effect on your budget.

Imagine you're planning a September wedding.

You find five photographers you love.

Four are already booked.

Now you're choosing from whoever is left—or increasing your budget to find another option.

Winter often gives couples more vendor availability.

That means you may actually be able to compare vendors based on:

Price.

Style.

Personality.

Packages.

Experience.

What's included.

Instead of simply asking:

"Who is still available?"

More availability gives you more control over where your money goes.

6. DJs, Entertainment and Other Vendors May Offer Off-Season Pricing

Venues aren't the only wedding vendors worth asking.

Depending on the business, you may find winter pricing from:

DJs.

Photo booths.

Transportation companies.

Rental companies.

Planners.

Hair and makeup artists.

Florists.

Videographers.

Even if a vendor doesn't advertise an off-season discount, it doesn't hurt to ask if they offer different packages for winter dates.

Just don't go into the conversation expecting every vendor to negotiate.

Their price is their price.

You're simply asking whether they already have an off-season option available.

7. Hotels May Be More Affordable—Depending on Location

If you're inviting guests from outside Minnesota or having your wedding somewhere that requires overnight accommodations, hotel costs matter too.

Hotel pricing is extremely dependent on location and what's happening nearby.

A winter weekend without a major event may have very different hotel rates than a busy summer weekend.

That could potentially make your wedding less expensive foryour guests, too.

But definitely check what's happening locally.

A winter festival, major sporting event, conference or holiday weekend could completely change hotel availability and pricing.

8. You May Spend LESS on Décor

This isn't guaranteed, but winter venues can sometimes do a lot of the decorating for you.

Maybe your venue has:

A giant fireplace.

Beautiful wood interiors.

String lights.

Evergreen trees outside.

Large windows overlooking snow.

Warm chandeliers.

Historic architecture.

If the space already creates the cozy atmosphere you want, you may not feel the need to bring in thousands of dollars of additional décor.

And if you're getting married around the holidays, some venues may already be decorated.

That can be either fantastic or terrible depending on what you want. 😂

If you love the decorations, GREAT.

If you don't want your wedding to look Christmasy, ask exactly what decorations will be present before you book.

9. Flowers Could Go Either Way

This is one area where I wouldn't automatically assume winter means cheaper.

Certain flowers may be harder or more expensive to source depending on the season.

Others may be readily available.

Your florist can help you choose flowers that give you the overall look you want while staying within your budget.

This is where being flexible helps.

Instead of saying:

"I absolutely need these five exact flowers."

Show your florist inspiration and explain the overall look, colors and feeling you're going for.

They may be able to recommend seasonal alternatives.

10. Winter Weddings Can Have Some EXTRA Costs Too

Okay, let's talk about the other side.

Because I don't want to pretend winter automatically makes everything cheaper.

There are some expenses that may be unique to a Minnesota winter wedding.

For example:

Transportation

If you're moving between multiple locations, you may want reliable transportation for your wedding party—especially if the weather is bad.

Coat Check

Depending on your venue and guest count, you may need somewhere for everyone to put those giant Minnesota winter coats.

Heaters

If you're using any semi-outdoor spaces, you may need heaters.

Weather Backup Plans

Certain plans may need an indoor alternative.

Winter Accessories

Boots, wraps, coats, gloves or other cold-weather accessories can add to your clothing budget.

Snow Removal

This will often be handled by the venue, but it's worth confirming who is responsible for keeping parking lots and walkways safe.

So yes, you might save $1,000 somewhere and spend $300 of it somewhere else.

That's why you need to look at thewhole wedding budget, not just the venue rental price.

Where Should You Spend Your Winter Wedding Budget?

This is obviously different for every couple.

But here's the question I'd ask:

What will actually matter to us after the wedding is over?

Maybe that's having amazing food.

Maybe it's hiring the DJ you really want because your dance floor is important to you.

Maybe you want an incredible venue.

Maybe you want both professional photography AND videography.

Maybe you couldn't care less about centerpieces but want an amazing honeymoon.

There's no correct answer.

If choosing a winter wedding saves you money, you don't HAVE to use that money to make your wedding bigger.

You could simply...

spend less.

That's allowed. 😂

Or you could take the money you're saving on the date and put it toward the parts of your wedding you care about most.

How Much Could a Minnesota Winter Wedding Save You?

There isn't one number I can give you.

Anyone telling you:

"Winter weddings are 30% cheaper!"

without knowing your venue, vendors, guest count or wedding plans is oversimplifying things.

Instead, price out two versions of your wedding.

Option A: Your Peak-Season Date

Ask your favorite vendors for pricing on a popular Saturday during peak wedding season.

Then compare it with:

Option B: A Winter Date

Ask those SAME vendors what pricing or packages are available for a January, February or other qualifying winter wedding.

Now compare the totals.

Not just the venue.

Everything.

That's the only way to know what YOUR actual savings could be.

This may be one of the biggest opportunities for flexible couples.

Instead of choosing a Saturday simply because weddings traditionally happen on Saturdays, consider:

Friday.

Or even:

Thursday.

Snowy portraits.

Candlelight.

Cozy receptions.

Faux-fur wraps.

Winter colors.

Earlier sunsets.

And doing something a little different...

Then the potential savings are a pretty great bonus.
